1.2m Baiyun Lake alligator gar ‘monster’ caught

Guangzhou authorities have captured the unidentified creature lurking in Baiyun Lake.

A massive operation to capture this creature started on 13 February. After water level in the lake was lowered, nets were cast on 14 February.

At 10am 16 February, a 0.9m juvenile alligator gar was caught. At 4.30pm 17 February, another 1.2m alligator gar weighing 20kg was netted.

Alligator gar Atractosteus spatula is an invasive species introduced by aquarium trade. It is native to North America. Guangzhou authorities remind residents not to release non-native creatures into the wild.
